The International Institute for Management Development (IMD) was established in 1990 in Lake Geneva, Switzerland. It was formed with the incorporation of independent management education centers, International Management Institute (IMI) and Institut l’Etude des Methodes de Direction de l’Entreprise (IMEDE). It differs from other traditional business schools because it is not affiliated with a university. There are no academic departments, and the EMBA program is condensed into 15 months of courses. (Unlike the typical 20-22 month programs). The school places a large importance on having an international population of students who demonstrate high-quality general management and leadership qualities.

IMD offers an Executive MBA program for students farther along in their career. Students must have a minimum of 10 years work experience to be considered for admission. The schedule is flexible, with about 50 weeks of distance learning. The curriculum for this program is slightly different than the traditional MBA degree. The program is set up in two stages: Foundation and Mastery. Topics of courses include business fundamentals, globalization, leadership, strategy, and execution. Classes are taught through guest presentations, exercises and role-plays, case studies, class and video sessions, management simulation, company assignments, and problem solving and conflict resolution. Students also participate in personal coaching and collaborative work.

EMBA students have access to many research centers at IMD, including the IMD Global Family Business Center, the IMD Global Value Chain Center, and the IMD Global Board Center. Students can also get involved with the IMD Global Center for Sustainability Leadership, the IMD World Competitiveness Center (WCC), the Center for Corporate Sustainability Management (CSM), and the Evian Group IMD. This last group focuses on international trade and investments. Additionally, because of the importance placed on international business, students can get exposure to many overseas businesses in places like Mumbai, India, and Shanghai, China.
